The New Jersey Equine Industry 2007: Economic Impact Study
“The New Jersey Equine Industry, 2007” is the result of eighteen months of work led by the Equine Science Center, involving government agencies on the federal and state level and several equine-related organizations and private individuals. It is based on the first comprehensive study of the state horse industry since 1996 and reports on the impact of the equine industry on New Jersey’s economy, on traditional agriculture, and on the preservation of open space.

Horse Health and Management Podcasts The Equine Science Center offers this series of podcasts as a way to accommodate the public’s desire to learn “on the run.” All the podcasts in the series are based on Rutgers Cooperative Extension Fact Sheets, consisting of original research by Extension and Equine Science Center-affiliated faculty as well as summaries of research and publications produced by other prominent scholars and experts. These podcasts cover some of the most asked-for information on topics of interest to horse and horse farm owners and individuals involved in the horse industry.

Lord Nelson Presents The Scoop On Poop: Animal Waste Management Plans
"Lord Nelson," a 37-year old chestnut Quarter Horse, served Rutgers University for over 20 years as both a mounted patrol horse and the bearer of the Rutgers Scarlet Knight mascot at football games. Now, as "Professor Emeritus" of the Equine Science Center, he will share the wisdom gained from his years of experience to help educate students of all ages about horse care and horse farm management.
The State of New Jersey requires that all livestock farms proactively address and manage non-point source pollution that may originate from livestock operations. To help farm owners get started with their Animal Waste Management Plans, Lord Nelson presents "The Scoop on Poop."
Horses 2007 Farm and Land Management Short Course on DVD
Horse farm owners and managers were taught the principles of pasture growth and rotation and weed identification and management with a variety of other lecture and demonstration topics at the Horses 2007 Farm and Land Management Short Course. The program included lectures and demonstrations on manure disposal and storage options and water quality strategies. A 10-disc DVD set of the short course is now available for purchase.
A Delicate Balance: The Future of Horse Racing and the Preservation of the Equine Industry, Agriculture, and Open Space in the Garden State This white paper was prepared by Dr. Karyn Malinowski, Director of the Equine Science Center, at the request of the Hall Public Policy Institute in Trenton, New Jersey, as an analysis of the future of the horse racing industry in the state.
Impact of Slot Machines/Video Lottery
Terminals
The Rutgers Equine Science Center recently released an independent in-depth report of the impact of slot machines or video lottery terminals on the horse racing and breeding industry, and agriculture and open space. The study, published by the Hall Institute of Public Policy, is a follow-up to a 2006 white paper written by Dr. Karyn Malinowski, director of the Equine Science Center at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
