Annual Equine Science Center Stakeholders' Meeting Actively Engages Equine Community
New Brunswick, N.J. – The Rutgers Equine Science Center’s Stakeholders' Meeting was a tremendous success as horse owners and farmers, businessmen, breeders, and equine enthusiasts gathered to address issues within the equine industry in New Jersey. The annual event, held October 16, 2009, was well attended with more than 60 stakeholders focusing their attention on horse health, integrity of equestrian sport, land use and environmental stewardship, the future of the equine industry and other areas of concern.
Dr. Karyn Malinowski, director of the Equine Science Center, opened the meeting by reviewing the Center’s accomplishments during the 18-month period of January 2008 – June 2009. Highlights included exceptional staff productivity, targeted fundraising efforts, several student awards and scholarships, continued scientific research and collaboration with other academic institutions, and the Horses 2009 educational conference.
After evaluating recent accomplishments, Dr. Malinowski encouraged an open discussion amongst stakeholders. Attendees expressed concern about colic, treating and administering medication, and laminitis. Natural supplements were also discussed, as well as identifying solar energy sources on farms, water runoff rules, composting and the animal waste management rule, soil disturbance and drainage issues. Stakeholders also focused on responsible horse ownership, reinvigorating the horse racing industry in New Jersey, hay and alternative sources of forage, and the therapeutic benefit of horses.
The discussion proved lively and productive as many attendees offered feedback, suggestions, and ideas. The Center’s faculty members and several graduate students were present to assist with scientific insight and expertise.
